Summary

Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone

They killed my mother。
They took our magic。
They tried to bury us。
Now we rise。

Zelie remembers when the soil of Orisha hummed with magic。 When different clans ruled - Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zelie's Reaper mother summoning forth souls。

But everything changed the night magic disappeared。 Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zelie without a mother and her people without hope。 Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden。

Zelie is one such person。 Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy。 With the help of a rogue princess, Zelie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good。

Danger lurks in Orisha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters。 Yet the greatest danger may be Zelie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic - and her growing feelings for an enemy。

I found the characters very off in this book。 It was like each character’s POV was exactly the same person? And no one had any convictions or loyalties or strong feelings that couldn’t be swayed by a few words or small actions。 I also found the pacing to be very off as well。 It’s a journey story! 。。。wait, no, it’s a sit and let things happen story。。。 wait, no, it’s a let’s party story。。。 let’s live in dreams? Yet another story that could be told in half the pages。Definitely angsty YA。 Definitely I found the characters very off in this book。 It was like each character’s POV was exactly the same person? Adventure, love, action, betrayal, magic and so much more is present in this story。 I was concerned that it wouldn't live up to the hype but it does。A brother who does anything to protect his sister。 A father broken by loss。 Another brother who does anything to gain his father's love。 Sisters who both feel they are not good enough。 All are very human and imperfect but they all try to protect those they love and do what is right。As well as the humanity shown there is also the corruption and bruta Adventure, love, action, betrayal, magic and so much more is present in this story。 I was concerned that it wouldn't live up to the hype but it does。A brother who does anything to protect his sister。 A father broken by loss。 Another brother who does anything to gain his father's love。 Sisters who both feel they are not good enough。 All are very human and imperfect but they all try to protect those they love and do what is right。As well as the humanity shown there is also the corruption and brutality caused by grief, power and fear of the unknown。 There are so many ways this book could be translated as the story of almost every nation if the magic wasn't there as a reason for the fear and was replaced by religion or skin colour。 A brilliant piece of writing getting the reader to think without being confrontational about it。 。。。more

First half was all magic and adventure, second half was slower on adventure and more YA type interpersonal story lines。 Loved both。 The magic was very magic-y, very pure ethereal magic, I liked the world building。

Good, but not my favorite。 The world building was interesting, but the magic rules were a little fast and loose。

I'm quite sure people should've let out all of those breaths by now。Nevertheless, I did quite enjoy the remaining pages。 Still not the most original ending, but decent enough。 Albeit not enough to push me through reading the next book。 It was quite a ride, and I thank Zelie, Tzain, Amari, and Inan for the enjoyable read。 But I think I'm saying goodbye to this series and the characters, so allow me to pour out all my thoughts on this one。First, Zelie。 I guess I like her, but there isn't much to say about her。 She is conveniently pretty to attract a prince and is chosen by the gods to save the world, so there's really not much to talk about。 We already know how that story goes。Tzain, however, I actually liked。 I always love stories of unconditional love between family, but I was quite stunned and disappointed when he seemed to demand payment mid-end。 He ended up as an okay character for me。Amari I hated so much for a good two-thirds of the book, and even towards the end I secretly despised her。 She just came off to me as a whiny character, and it really has nothing to do with her being a princess but with her mentioning Binta all。 the。 damn。 time。 And you see, the problem with this is that I。 don't。 care。 about。 Binta。 That's what happens when you kill off a character without building it—no one cares。 You can imagine me fuming when she claims the title "the Lionaire"。 Oh please。 What would Binta say?And then there's Inan。 Now where do I start with this one? I didn't care for him at all。 Not once, not ever。 He's a dog to me。 Following the king when he holds his treats, following Zelie when she does。 Overall, I'm not at all moved by him or his betrayal。 In fact, it doesn't seem like one。 He's never seemed to be able to pick sides, after all。Then there's the king, whom I also don't care about。 Or Kaea。 Or everyone else。 I really did like Zu, Kwame, and Roen, though。 I was hoping the first two wouldn't be killed off and they would form part of the team。 Perhaps it would've been more exciting。Overall, it's a nice read。 I'm not looking forward to the next ones, though。 This will be the official close of the Legacy of Orisha series for me。 。。。more

Great world building with magic, giant animals, conflicted royals, self doubting heroes, young romance and rebels。 Most of the characters are described as People of Color as well as the main characters。 And no one is compared to food!
